Odors have a host of sources all contributing to the overall smell that is otherwise unpleasant. Most odors have to be eliminated where they originate, otherwise the best you can do is mask the foul. Knowing the cause is half the battle, and a lot of various odors that are overwhelming your home are found on the upholstery. The sofa is one of the most used pieces of furniture where people will spend hours watching tv, visiting, reading and even sleeping. From pet accidents, to wet-dog smells, and body odor being major contributors, eliminating the cause will immediately improve the smell in your home. With that in mind, we at ADC Carpet Cleaning would like to offer some tips to neutralize the odors stemming from your sofa.
How to Clean & Get Out Body or Dog Odor Out of Couch
Most odors that are emitting from the upholstery are protein-based. Pet accidents and sweat need a little extra if you are wanting to treat the odors yourself. Enzyme cleaners are needed to destroy the protein-based spots or stains and they should be treated first. Be sure you invest in a quality upholstery cleaner with enzymes to treat these spots causing the odors.
1) Prepare to Remove Upholstery Smells. Before treating the upholstery with any cleaner, start by giving the surface a good vacuum. Use the vacuum’s hose and attachments to thoroughly the vacuum the surface under the cushions, all around each cushion and in the crevices.
2) Treat Enzymes. Pet accidents, sweat, vomit, and other bodily fluid type spots should be treated with the upholstery cleaner specifically with enzyme cleaners according to the directions on the label. Removing the protein-based stains is the root of the source and before you can attack the odor molecules you have to combat the stains/spots.
3) Odor Removal. Make the following solution in a bowl before adding it to a squirt bottle for easy application: 2 cups lukewarm water and 2 cups distilled white vinegar mix well, then slowly stir into 4 table spoons of baking soda until it is full dissolved. Pour the solution into a squirt bottle. If you do not have a spray bottle, treat a cloth in the solution and sponge it onto the spots or stain area. Once you have administered the solution, allow to sit for 5-10 minutes. Use a dry, clean cloth to blot away the remaining moisture.
4) Final Cleaning Steps. Once the area has been treated, sprinkle baking soda around the previously infected areas and allow it to sit for several hours or overnight. When the area is completely dry, vacuum away the baking soda remnants.
